Yeah, "novel" for that part of the world I guess. The article mentions that it originates from Bolivia, but I think there are even earlier prior-arts of trench farming to preserve fruit trees.
Yeah my old uni's botanical garden has underground greenhouses that are easily 100 years old.
Putting a glass roof on top of a fruit trench is just the next logical step really.
