The fact that Hillary was chosen as the Democratic party candidate over Bernie is criminal. Some shady shit most certainly went down.
Climate - truthful information about climate, related activism and politics.
Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.
As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades:
How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world:
Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:
Anti-science, inactivism, and unsupported conspiracy theories are not ok here.
They made some minor changes to the primary process afterwards but, it wasn't enough. The DNC and it's corporate interests put their hand on the scales for neo liberal pro corporate candidates every time. It's just insane to me that they didn't run on repealing trumps tax cut for the rich and raising taxes on the poor and middle class. They're more than happy to let those tax cuts for the wealthy stay in place for their donors.
Or it means that the bulk of Democrats weren't where he was when they voted in the primary.
Look up how few people vote in primaries, their age and demographic distribution. Saying that the bulk of Democrats wanted Hilary is just disingenuous. They made changes to make the process less openly bias afterwards for a reason.
So help turn people out to vote. There are established methods to turn environmentalists into regular primary voters (eg: the Environmental Voter Project)
If you don't do that, this kind of thing will keep on happening.
I voted for Bernie in the primary. Even though I'm in a state he'd never win the primary in, and knew would go Republican in the general. I'm really sick of you fucks who tell me I need to spend more time getting out the vote when me and my entire friends group vote, even though it's essentially a waste of time already.
There's maybe a half dozen states in the country that me getting involved would matter in. Our system is a joke. Why would I piss away my time and get harassed if I'm not in one?
The Democratic primary isn't winner-take-all by state, so your vote likely made a difference in how many delegates he got.
Narrator They did not, in fact, work together
Its in both countries interest to do it. I'd be perfectly happy to see a rivalry built around decarbonization.
I applaud your optimism, really I do. Hold on to it for dear life.
I'm just too cynical for my own good.
He's so cool
Love his enthusiasm, but is really can't be. 😰 Still, if you are interested in knowing some real efforts to climate change ala Social Ecology, you can check out:
- Ejercito Zapatista de Liberación Nacional
- Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria
- There are others but I can remember them by name, I would add here some ONGs but I think the best efforts have been those who straight-up work against climate change and social justice, since both are intertwined.
For those interested on why this will totally not happen: there's this great book called Capital as Power: The Study of Order and Creorder that's covers why the creed of capitalization discounts people and environment from their books.
Spoiler: Its because of how power over creation works and its motivated to accumulate power.
Last year the US passed the Inflation Reduction Act; it's expected to do this:
So you can at least sometimes get big parts of what we need by working within the system.
It helps, that's for sure. Is just that, as an effort, is insufficient. I just want the readers to not lose focus on the origin of the problem, which is the system of power.
You can't ask the butcher to stop killing, his business is butchering. I understand what you are saying and, of course, keep up the good work fellow solarpunk. What I'm trying to say is that: making political demands to the state of capital has serious limits, and we need to keep on doing that WHILE pre-configurating socio-political organizations. That way we can make resonant means and ends.
Please, do keep in mind that this point of view is created in a "let's hurry" context. Since houses all around where I was born are affected by landslides and overflowing rivers. And waiting for those politics to work will mean death, or at least sickness or famine for us.
You can't change the system of power unless you hold power. So yes, there's going to be a fair bit of working within the system as we get there.
