allegations of sexual misconduct

Why do they always misspell rape in these articles?? 🤔

[–] BertramDitore@lemm.ee 22 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah this bugs the hell out of me. A 17 year old is not capable of consenting to sex with an adult. That’s how our laws work. Sex with a minor is by definition rape, so they should absolutely call it what it is: a credible rape allegation.

Well, unfortunately....

(And because I know people will assume otherwise unless I state plainly this is not a defense of the rapist)

[–] BertramDitore@lemm.ee 6 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I forgot how many states are so damn creepy about age of consent. I think the alleged rape happened in Florida though, so the issue is moot, but still worth pointing out.

But also, our national definition of an adult is 18, so how the hell can the states be so different on consent? Federalism has its downsides I guess…

Curious if the downvotes are because I wasn’t totally right about the law, or something else?

I think a lot of these are covering Romeo and Juliet scenarios. 19+16 is def not ok in a lot of those.

Most states don't have an explicit crime called rape it's generally called sexual misconduct or sexual assault.

This is great news. I'll enjoy this up until the next shoe drops, and Trump's next pick is even worse than Gaetz.

[–] Bakkoda@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Honest question though: Could this train be obviously headed very quickly to a cliff that the die hard, career grifters are gonna pass and only the megalomaniac/delusional/etc figures are strapped in with their special RGB gold plated maga hats?

We've already jumped off the cliff. It's not a matter of if we hit the ground. It's a matter of when we hit it.

[–] Bakkoda@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Fair point lol

Trump should just offer to keep Merrick Garland on board as AG. Nobody has done more to assure Trump was not held accountable for 1/6 than him. He’d be perfect for providing cover for whatever crimes Donnie and Elmo are cooking up right now at Mar-a-Lago.

Gaetz? Pull out? First time for everything I guess...

[–] Rapidcreek@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

Better Headline: "Gaetz drops out of AG consideration to spend more time with your kids."

[–] NeoToasty@kbin.melroy.org 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So is Greene going to follow up on her threat?

[–] Ledivin@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The report wasn't released, was it? So there's nothing to follow up on

[–] masterofn001@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Well, there is the fact that she has admitted to knowingly hiding scandals.

In other words, she is an accessory, after the fact, to crimes.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

"I AM HIDING CRIMINAL SCANDALS INVOLVING MASTEROFN001! LOTS AND LOTS OF SCANDALS!"

I don't need a law degree to walk myself out of that one, and neither does she.

[–] masterofn001@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

If you admit to being an accessory, or claim to be, that would be broadcasting that you have committed a crime.

If someone says they have commited a crime, they need to be investigated for the crime(s) they claim to have commited (accessory, obstruction, etc).

Walk back all you want.

It's either libel or it's complicity in a cover-up or blackmail or extortion.

[–] Bluefalcon@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 day ago

Get ready for a less public AG hut just as dangerous one.

Great now he can pick someone worse

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

So Trump won't back off, so the candidates have to instead. Or do we think Trump told him to withdraw?
