They also need to be suing the companies that are hawking this bullshit and getting rich off taxpayer money. Our officials need to make better decisions when purchasing shit like this. For instance, make sure there is some kind of fund set up by the provider of this technology to cover costs and liability when mistakes like this are made. Or at least hold them accountable. This is bullshit that the taxpayers pay for this on both ends, and these companies just walk away counting our money. Modern day snake oil.
Edit: I don't want the snake oil comment to diminish the fact that this is fucking with people's lives.

I thought the same thing. I can only imagine police departments are being sold an elaborate tall tale of how this will save money and the accuracy is unbelievably high.

Detroit detectives showed a photo lineup to the carjacking victim, who positively identified Woodruff.

Note only did facial recognition fail but so did the victim

Victims misidentifying perpetrators happens all the time. Witness testimony about strangers is extremely unreliable.

From what I have heard witness testimony in generally is extremely unreliable. Human memory sucks.

Yet another reason the death penalty should be outlawed. Being in death row when you know you're innocent has to be the worst thing ever. But the justice system in some states have a hard on for killing.

I think about that reality often. How could you ever trust a human again?

Yep, had some dick try to smash into my house. Got a clear look at him and yelled at him in my angry voice and he fucked off. A month later police called me and asked for specific details about his look. I was like wtf? Maybe ask me when you arrived 5 minutes later and not now. I couldn’t remember shit.

We've give full circle people! Remember back in the day (even now) police would get the description of a suspect, usually a black male l, and they would just go around arresting all black men in a 10 mile radius? Well now software can take all the racial profiling duties
