Mars atmosphere is just really light, so we need something a bit heavier than jazz

There's plenty of heavy jazz. Maybe try some late Coltrane or Peter Brötzmann. Tigran Hamasyan brings the djent influence, as well.

Metallica’s drummer was heavily influenced by jazz while growing up. No one believes me but it’s all there in a BBC interview.
